10 Essential Leadership Traits

The Authentic Leader

The Tyrant or Weakling Leader

Knows and shows their true self.
Believes in themselves.

Is unconscious and puts on an act of confidence or other persona.

Is balanced and centered.
Maintains a work-life balance; is calm and listens to intuition.

Is not balanced.
Work or something else dominates their life; fills silence and empty space with activity.

Is positive.
Believes in what's possible; sees opportunities everywhere; is excited and joyful about what they do.

Is negative.
Complains; sees threats everywhere; is anxious and aggravated in what they do.

Collaborates and serves.
Feels called to lead; creates a vision in collaboration; is enthusiastic about the mission; guides people toward the shared vision; has the humility to lead from behind.

Rules with an iron fist and serves self.
Leads out of obligation or to be in power; has no vision or has a self-serving vision; forces people in their direction; puts themselves in front to be seen.

Inspires greatness.
Trusts in others' abilities; encourages, challenges, empowers, and mentors people to become great; inspires and creates enthusiasm in others.

Keeps people down.
Micro manages, criticizes, and keeps people in the dark so they will not threaten their power; creates fear and apathy in others.

Cares and communicates.
Truly listens and communicates with interest and compassion.

Dismisses, discounts, and keeps people in the dark.
Ignores and interrupts.

Models integrity.
Is one in thoughts, words, and actions; does the right thing.

Models a lack of integrity.
Cannot be trusted; tells others to do right, but acts wrong themselves.

Is solutions-oriented.
Takes responsibility and looks towards solutions and the future; holds people accountable in a positive way.

Blames and shames.
Criticizes or avoids confrontation.

Is courageous.
Steps out in front and makes decisions; confronts the fear of new directions.

Allows fear to control them.
Procrastinates on difficult issues; maintains the status quo.

Constantly learns and grows.
